What is the quintessential Canadian Movie?

The invitations are out and RSVP's are flying back fast. I've just invited the neighborhood to a Canada Day Celebration this Wednesday, July 1. We're going to take advantage of our hideously long driveway and watch a movie on a huge screen under the stars. The problem is, I can't seem to think of a Canadian classic movie that would represent our quirky national identity. It doesn't have to be purely Canadian but it has to be entertaining to a wide spectrum of people who are watching Wednesday night. I'm really stuck. Does such a movie really exist? Any ideas?

Hmmm, good question.

I lived in England for a few years and during bouts of home sickness, I found 'Highway 61' strangely comforting. BUT! I do think that what Canadian film makers do very well is short films... to me, 'National Film Board of Canada' films are very Canadian.

I love National Film Board films! I just found one called, "How to Braid Rope".

With more research I have discovered the favourite Canadian films are
Jesus de Montreal
Mon oncle Antoine
The Sweet Hereafter
Wavelength
While these seem like interesting films none of them fit the light celebratory objective of the evening.
I'll keep searching...oh dear..running out of time.

And, there's always Porkies! ;-)

(very much a joke... I hate that movie!)
