Breaking The Rules

I was always told, "Don't bother taking shots directly into the sun" since the exposure would be flawed. But then I attended a presentation by Deddeda Stemler and she declared that she loved shooting into the sun. I think I'll take a beautiful day and shoot all my photos into the sun then check out the results.

Right you are Kathleen. I especially love the early light or late sunsets when you can get a nice filter effect from trees or mist. My 50mm lens seems to work great with the sun-burst on the glass, while other lenses streak with their multi-coated layers. I also like the washout effect for black-and-white photography when you shoot into the sun. Worked really well in the Kashgar Bazaar for example, taking pictures of goats and camels being traded by the Uyrgr people!

I love breaking the rules! The pictures I took after the ice storm would never have given the impact of the ice had I not taken the picture into the sun. The trick is to have it reflect the way you want it to.

If you are going to take pictures into the sun, make sure that you capture the sun (and its beams) as part of the picture. Otherwise, it washes out the subjects. I would also experiment with different angles. One of the best pictures I took this year was at the beach when my daughter and her friend were hoovering over me (dripping on me) as I laid on the beach (under an umbrella). It came out really interesting.

Isn't that true? Angle, placement and reflection play a big part in the overall effect. I would love to see the beach photo. Is it on your blog too?

Unfortunately, I don't like to make public pictures of my children (or their friends). I know, I sound like a movie star! Part of it is my daughter is a teenager would be mortified if this picture was on the internet.
