Took these shots with my new wide angle lens while visiting Thetis Lake. I'm still learning to increase the aperture more and adjust the angle to avoid unwanted shadows. This is the same tree species at different stages of life. Most people I talk to are enamoured with these reptilian Madronas but no one wants one on their property (except those who are full time gardeners:) because they are constantly shedding their leaves and bark.

Love the linear layers in this composition. The Arbutus is a wonderful subject -- colour and texture seem to always be changing.
I thought at first the middle tree was infested with bugs! I'm assuming it isn't (otherwise, I have to admit to being a bit grossed out by it).
Yes, I think I'll do an abstract photo shoot of just Arbutus trees.

I guess the peeling bark does look like bugs. Actually the bark is much more striking than depicted here. It almost appears to be moving when I look at it in without the lense.
